Sample SOP MSc Electrical Engineering from University of Glasgow in UK

Right from my childhood, I had the opportunity to get exposed to basic communication engineering concepts since my elder brother (B.E, M. Tech (Telecomm.), M.B.A (Finance)) was working in one of the reputed networking company. He used to explain me how whole telephone network works with the help of switches, how internet works with the help of ISPs, difference between analog and digital technologies, difference between wired and wireless services and many more basic engineering concept. Since I had an inquisitive mind, I used to ponder about vastness and scope of communication, how various things work and what made them to function. Slowly I developed an interest in communication and related subjects. My discussion with him convinced me that specializing in communications would suit me very well. In my final year project of Bachelor’s degree, I successfully tried to put my interest practically by developing application software called as “A LAN/IP Network Based Messenger Using VC++”. I believe it will also serve to give direction to my goal of a career as a research professional at an academic or commercial, research oriented organization.

Academics, thus has been my closest companion. Due to my high grades in 10th grade public examination and 12th grade public examination I secured second position and first position in high school and junior college respectively. After my successful high school and junior college results and my aspiration to learn more about Telecommunication and internet technology secured me a position in the Electronics Engineering department of G.H.Raisoni College of Engineering (www.ghrce.com), a premier school for engineering and applied science in Central India, affiliated to Nagpur University, accredited by NBA, AICTE New Delhi. The entire course in Electronics Engineering has helped me to improve progressively my perception of the filed and accrue academic and applied knowledge combined with relevant skills. Right from 1st year I was among the top 5 students in my branch securing distinction in my 3rd and 4th year with overall percentage of 71%.

Telecommunication engineering has always been a passion for me. As I delved into the realm of engineering, my initial fascination turned into one of unquenchable obsession. During my under graduate program areas that appealed most to me, viz, Communication Network, Digital Communication, Mobile Communication, Analog Communication, Micro Processor & Application, VLSI Design & Circuits. Due to my interest in communication subjects my final year project was also based on the communication. “A LAN/IP Network Based Messenger Using VC++” was the project undertaken in the final year which supports features like PC to PC Call over IP, Instant Messaging over IP, File transfer and E-mail Browsing. By installing this application software anywhere either in LAN or IP network we can make PC-to-PC Calls, Instant Messaging, File transfer and E-mail Browsing. In this project we are using VC++ for developing application software. This project is an attempt to enter into the telecommunication technology and to understand the basics of communication and Internet in order to add an additional feature into the current application software that is being currently used widely. Besides this, a mini-project “A bi-directional Visitor counter” was undertaken in 3rd year to understand the basics of electronics branch and electronics components. A Bi-directional counter as its name suggest is a two way counter .It can count the number of entries as well as the number of exits. Thus this counter can be used to know the number of visitors present in a room in a given time .It is useful in movie halls, shopping malls, buildings, offices, banks, etc. This whole exercise was highly instrumental in widening my horizons and giving me the feel of a research environment, which I found very stimulating. Thus, my undergraduate studies were an exercise that combined research with practical implementation. I honed my computer knowledge with courses in C, C++ and VC++. The fact that I enjoyed the entire activity so much, put to rest any doubts about my career choice of the future. A master’s program in Electrical Engineering from University of Glasgow, UK became the natural selection and a first step towards achieving my subsequent objective of doing a Ph.D.

I have attended the seminars sponsored by BROCADE Company and CISCO Company during my HSC vacations in NEW DELHI. In these seminars, I came to know about many new technologies such as Wireless technologies, Voice over IP, Computer Networking, Wireless Networking, Concept of Storage Area Network and many others. During my 3rd year vacation I did internship program in DSL Networking Company where I studied how the whole new technology such as Voice over Internet works and learned about emerging protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol) etc. In addition I have been a student member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) for the past two years. Its seminars and publications like ‘The Spectrum’ have exposed me to a lot of Emerging Technologies in the field of telecommunication.

At the college level I have given seminars on two topics namely The Foundation of Storage Area Network (SAN) Fabric and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). I have participated two times also in the inter-college extempore competition. Despite the busy academic schedule I have always participated in extra curricular activities. I have been always associated in organization of the Gatherings, Technical Forums and Cultural Forums of college as well as department. I have voluntarily donated blood 8 times till now and willing to donate more in future. I believe strongly in doing social service and have also done it by helping my juniors, peers and seniors and whoever approached me till now. Truly the satisfaction I get by aiding others is immense and can’t be expressed in words. Besides technical study, I am also avid reader of non-technical books like fictional and non-fictional novels, essays, biographies, etc for instance DA Vinci Code, Five Point Someone, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, The Argumentative Indian, Wings Of Fire, Autobiography Of M.K.Gandhi, etc. Out of the above books I liked the most were “Wings of Fire” which is authored by famous INDIAN Scientist “A P J Abdul Kalam” and “Autobiography of M.K. Gandhi” which is written by Non-Violent freedom fighter “Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi”. In both the books commitment, focus, pledge and uphill struggle are the qualities of both the personalities that have tempted me most for the attainment of the objective.

I have studied few layered protocols such as SIP, TCP/IP, UDP, IP and MGCP. I am really interested in subjects like Mobile Communication, Computer Communication Network, Digital Communication, Computer Organization, VLSI and VHDL and I feel that perseverance and eagerness to learn new things are my strongest qualities. My ultimate career objective is to be intimately involved in research and academics. The essence of my motivation comes from my insatiable curiosity to dive deep into the field of telecommunication.

After 10 years down the line I see myself fulfilling my dream of being engaged in active research in telecommunication field which will be useful in the future generation. I can only make my dream come to reality by acting wisely today. It is due to this reason that I have applied to your graduate study at your renowned university. I believe that University of Glasgow will provide me that ideal platform to make a positive contribution towards my chosen field. I want to be successful in whatever I am doing and definitely a better person.

I am fully aware of the fact that a master’s degree requires sincerity, devotion and determination. It is belief that I cannot be more prepared or willing to study in UK and achieving my dreams. It would therefore be a privilege to be able to pursue Graduate Studies with adequate financial assistance in your institution. It is with this in mind, that I look forward to joining the Master’s degree Program in Electrical Engineering from University of Glasgow, UK. My interest and deep dedication to this field instills in me the confidence to meet the vigorous academic challenges that your curriculum would pose.

Sample SOP for MSc Applied Public Health from UK

The world will never forget the golden day when humans conquered smallpox, when we eradicated the same in 1980. Also we are on the verge of eradicating one more dreadful disease, poliomyelitis. All this could be achieved when we could communicate with the people and take them with us. Yes, that’s one of the jobs of an epidemiologist. Thus a single person can make out such a vast change. But still lots of things are to be done.

I am from a middle class, highly educated Indian family. I have three sisters the two elder one are engineer and third one is doctor and I am the youngest. Since my childhood I have seen people considering the health profession as a noble one as it always had a social touch. This attracted me to think over this as a career.

Since my school days I started developing more and more interest in health science, which stemmed from an innate concern for life. So I took the decision to make it my career and was further boosted up by my father, who encouraged me to go towards my liking. So I worked hard in higher secondary exam to take a prestigious score of 83%. At the same time I cracked in Maharashtra State Common Entrance Exam and was in state merit list so that I could get admission in prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC).

At JNMC I started developing my interest in the field of public health. Especially, during my second year of MBBS, when we started learning Preventive and Community Medicine. Regarding community medicine we learnt many facts there like the principles of community medicine, functions of an epidemiologist, importance and scope of the subject and so on… which gave me a strong foundation in the field of public health.

The exhaustive curriculum along with the fieldwork gave me a lot of exposure to administration as well as execution of national disease control programs. We learned about simple and effective yet inexpensive techniques to tackle even the most formidable diseases, apt for developing countries. A health education program of the slum population was implemented after a survey of their neighborhood gave insight to the functioning of public health system. Analysis of the whole data was done and the certain suggestions were given to the population by taking account into their available resources. The MBBS undergraduate curriculum provided for a detailed study of epidemiology, planning and evaluation, statistics and international health which will help me understand the subjects of the Masters in Applied Public Health curriculum like principles of epidemiology, health policy, role of an epidemiologist etc.

My undergraduate training as a doctor gives me a strong foundation to develop my skills as an epidemiogist. As an intern I had to handle the day to day running of a primary health care center. I participated in Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP), National Program for control of Blindness, National AIDS Control Program, Pulse polio campaign, Reproductive and Child Health Program. Also we conducted many camps under various National Disease Control programs. For example, Eye check-up camp at Borgaon, Complete respiratory check-up camp at Pavnar, health check up camp for primary school students at Paloti. I was impressed with the range… depth and breadth of issues that public health programs could solve.

Currently I am planning to participate in a project aided by World Bank and Ministry of Health, India that will help me to take up the course of MPH more effectively.

At present I am Medical Officer at a Primary Health Center (PHC) run by Government of Maharashtra, where I am undertaking various tasks like guiding the health workers to carry out various health programs, attending out patient department, supervising health workers and PHC staff, attending monthly meeting with District Health Officer (DHO), forwarding the survey details to DHO.

I have attended the symposia related to Research projects such as Writing and analyzing case report, Medical data Information Searching and Processing. I have attended various CME on subjects like Gynecological oncology, advances in cardiology, newer interventional radiological techniques in venous insufficiency. Also I have participated on the workshop in Orthopedics on Total Hip Replacement.

I strived to excel not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities like acting, drama, music and sports like football, cricket and badminton. I have played three times at State level badminton championship and cricket at division level representing my district. At college, I won the badminton championship for a record four consecutive years. Sports have helped me become a better team player and served as a healthy outlet to the stress of the medical profession.

I plan to join Masters in Applied Public Health from University of Central Lancashire in Sep 2009 session. I choose the prestigious University of Wales Institute Cardiff program because its nationally reputed program prepares professionals to meet the challenges of a changing health-care industry. There are various problems that need to be tackled in the health care industry ranging from the AIDS epidemic to controlling tuberculosis in developing countries. Cost of medical care is getting costlier day by day. The evaluation of cost-benefit analysis of various medical procedures and drugs, vaccines or instruments is important and will be a demanding task. I look forward to attack and solve some of these problems after graduation.

Again after completion of my graduate course I intend to fulfill my dream of working in an international health organizations serving humanitarian needs like the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund or the International or Indian Red Cross. The MSc Applied Public Health program at UWIC in UK will provide the ideal launch pad for a career in the public health industry, serving the needs of disadvantaged and making a difference.

Sample SOP for MSc Construction Management from London Metropolitan University in UK

“Nature has made occupation a necessity to us; Society makes a duty; Habit makes it a pleasure.”

Introduction:

I am an architecture graduate from MIET, Gondia Professional Studies Academy that provides best faculties & facilities in architecture. Bachelors’ degree in architecture is a five-year course, affiliated to Nagpur University & AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). I wish to pursue my higher studies in Construction Management from London Metropolitan University commencing fall 2010.

Educational Background:

I would like to introduce myself as an active, diligent, optimistic and self-made person. As a kid I was fascinated with the buildings and wanted to make them. With each passing years, I realized that my career would be around the field that dealt with development of buildings. My interest for creating new dimensions and spreading my knowledge of creativity led me to select Architecture as my field of higher studies.

As a student of Architecture, I was introduced to the world of Graphic designing, Conceptual Design, Detailing, 3 Dimensional Conceptualization.

During my six month of professional training in the fifth year of my studies, I got the biggest break of my life when I joined one of the biggest and world-renowned Architectural consultancy firm of Mumbai, M/s Pheroze Kudianwala Consultancy Pvt Ltd. Working with the father of high rise buildings in Mumbai gave me the first insight into corporate Architecture. Their I got the chance to be a part of design team of several high Profile project like K.D.Malaviya oil museum in Guwahati , office building of securities and exchange board of India in Mumbai, UNIWORLD in Dubai, Mass Housing for TATA India in Mumbai, multi storied Head Quarter for Bank of Baroda in Mumbai.

There I realized that construction field-tests my brains with different level of questions each day. Each passing day brought in more opportunities to learn, explore, and stretch my capacity to work & on top of that it involves a lot of fieldwork, unlike other fields where monotony governs in working environment & tasks both. Though I found myself to be suitable to work in construction field but it was required to give a direction to my interest. It involves a wide variety of challenges and an accelerating factor that something new, unique & functional will come up in end.

“You can’t do things differently until you see things differently”

Why shift from architecture to construction management:

Architecture a science based on aesthetics and functions of building, involves factors like sociology and psychology, but it stands basically on the process of construction, design and structure. Materialization of those aesthetics & functions occur when proper management of construction, design & structures is done.

I’ve been associated with the construction field for a couple of years & had done various tasks ranging from drafting, designing and site supervising. I had worked as trainee architect then assistant architect and now I am working as a Project Architect. And during my exposure to profession, I realized the importance of management in the process of construction. My education as an architect is helping me to deal only with the designing aspect of the process of construction of a building and when it comes to management I realized my education is inadequate. And here I felt the need to become a construction manager. I realized that a construction manager had to be ‘a master of all’ kind of person & parallel to it should possess core knowledge of project management. In my opinion this course will broaden my perspective of multi-functional aspects of construction business, contract management and related subjects, and equip myself with the knowledge and skills to exercise higher managerial responsibilities successfully. Moreover, the need of managerial positions in construction industry is at a steep rise, which reinforces my decision to pursue a research-oriented career in construction management.

“One can because one thinks one can”

My Extra-Curricular Activities:

All through my school and college life I have played an active role in extra-curricular activities. I enjoyed taking part in debates, extempore, dances etc. I always was at the forefront in organizing different events in school as well as the colleges. I was on the editor of the college magazine ‘Ankur’. Writing is one of my hobbies and I take pleasure in reading and keeping myself a best of latest technical developments in construction industry .I also have a keen interest in photography and I had organized many photography exhibitions during my years in architectural school. I had presented papers in NASA conventions (national association of students of architecture) and I had won prizes on my papers related to environmental architecture, low cost housing techniques, Importance of management in architecture, vernacular architecture in India.
