Sheffield Hallam University is identified as one of UK’s most innovative as well technologically progressive university. If one has to look at the history of this university then one needs to go back to the 18th century when the Sheffield School of Design was founded in 1843. 1905- City Of Sheffield Training College on Collegiate Crescent admitted first batch of 90 students.
1969- Merger of Sheffield School of Art & design and College of Technology into Sheffield Polytechnic.
1976- Sheffield Polytechnic renamed to Sheffield City Polytechnic.
1992- City Polytechnic earned the right to award its own degrees and title of University and was renamed as Sheffield Hallam University.
There are over 30,000 students including 3,000 students from over 120 countries and staff of 4100. The university accommodates them all in its two campuses i.e. City Campus in the main city and collegiate campus at the leafiest suburbs. A new building was added in May 2005 for health and social care education at Crescent campus known as Robert Winston Building. Situated in the fifth largest city of England, Sheffield Hallam University shares its base with Europe’s largest further education college. Sheffield city is also known for its low crime rate and exciting night life for students.
The university is in partnership with over 70 professional bodies like Sony, BP, SAP, Cisco, Network Rail, Microsoft and NHS. It has invested £81 million in teaching & learning facilities over the last decade which has helped a lot in raising the popularity of the university. One more engaging characteristic or attraction at this £150 million turnover generating university is its research support and facility. There are at present 16 research centers, 2 Yorkshire forward centers of industrial collaboration and various other specialized research groups. Sheffield Hallam University in fact continues to be in Top 10 post-92 Universities for research quality. Its key areas like material science, art & design, sports science, engineering, biomedicine, social and economic research.
The university offers at present 610 courses in different fields like manufacturing, IT, wholesale, retail trade, social work, finance, hospitalities, property, business education and healthcare etc. There are 200 specialized flexible courses [part time study, distance learning and work based living]. There are student supporting departments which take care of accommodation, business start up service, international student support group, career and employment services, alumni office etc.
