Sample SOP for dual MBA & CFA at LSBF in UK

The term ‘globalism’ has become overused and often misused. Infact we might say that it has actually been devalued to the level of the every day language of buzzword brandishing Marketing pundits. Such a freewheeling usage has perhaps propelled many CEO (or potential CEOs) to launch into a global plan or strategy without proper consideration of the demands and dynamics of the international market place. Many would be globetrotters neglect the acquision of language skills knowledge of foreign trade and tax laws, accounting standards etc all of which are necessary to effectively “go global”. Superficial knowledge only leads to failure.

This has indeed happened and while there is no doubt that neglecting to capture the gains achievable in overseas market is equally suicidal, misguided attempts at competing globally (along with rapidly developing opportunities in the global marketplace) have placed a dramatic premium on individuals who take the time to properly train themselves in international business. For me, LSBF MBA CFA is significant component of this training.

I foresee my own career in the direction of Europe, America business, initially from an advisory perspective (i.e., investment banking or consulting). This prophecy, in part, has evolved from my past experience in CMIE, which in turn, have formed my opinion about certain opportunities that should emerge in future.

Over the course of experience I demonstrated skills in performing broad range of consulting services for chartered Accountants, Researchers, Investment companies, Commercial banks, manufacturing companies etc. Manage client relationships and worked in joint client relationship and consultants teams formulating recommendation for change. Evaluating investment opportunities analyzing and valuing investment proposals to forecast IRR (internal rate of return) business models and strategy analysis of companies. Provide analytical and financial modeling support for preparation of term sheets and due diligence reports. I also have interest in reading and constructing Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow Statement. At the same time I also can understand some of the basic financial ratios, valuation knowledge using DCF and Multiple. I have good internet research skills. Financial Analysis of Indian Listed stocks entailing: some data entry of financial data acquired from annual reports, stock market release media etc. I also create financial models in (MS Excel.) to forecast key company financial metrics PER, EPS, NPAT. Etc. Monitor the stock for changes (New information especially quarterly & half yearly earnings reports) and keeping all the models up to date.

When introduced to finance and accounting in high school and in graduation days I realized that it interestingly qualified as a subject of both arts and science. It was an area defined by precise rules, principles and axioms and yet there was tremendous scope for self expression in the form of interpretation and analysis. This facet of accounting and finance intrigued me very mush and I decided to pursue further studies in MBA in finance and CFA.

During my post graduate studies, I equipped myself as best I could with various tools used in financial analysis. I obtained rigorous training in Accounting and Finance. After completing graduation I joined Indian Institute of Banking and Finance as I was eager to see how one might use finance to tackle real life problems, where simplified models and assuming away of problems may offer no respite. I did some very interestingly work in CMIE, which is described in my resume.

I want to delve deeper into the subject to be able to carry out independent research and analysis, hence my decision to join MBA and CFA program at LSBF.

During my graduation studies, I aim to equip myself with advanced tools and develop my analytical and research capabilities. I want to get an excellent command over finance to be able to confront stochastic financial data with exact models of financial theories and also for empirical verification of other models which might otherwise be set in partial equilibrium framework. I expect to emerge as a financial engineer and an expert in financial modeling.

I want study at LSBF, as it emphasizes on the rigorous and analytical tools that are necessary for academic research. I have well developed analytical and mathematical skills and I want to exploit these skills to the greatest extent. I feel the help and guidance that can be provided to me by the distinguished of your institute will be invaluable.

Throughout my school and undergraduate education, I have been keen participant in extra-curricular activities. Getting elected as the School pupil leader helped me organizational and interpersonal skills. At my graduation level I have been involved in the annual cultural fest as the head of control team. I have also taken part in dramatics and made contribution to society.

The years of undergraduate education have been an enriching experience both academically and otherwise and I am determined to maintain the high levels of the excellence throughout my career.

My immediate objective is an MBA in finance a rapidly evolving field with an immense potential for research. I wish to follow it up with a CFA, to pursue a career in investment management and experience the excitement and satisfaction of being at the forefront of this expanding field.

I am sure if I am given opportunity to study at your institute that attracts some of the best students from all over the world, it will provide an environment competitive enough to bring out the best in me.

“The decline in Europe’s manufacturing industries causing major concern across the EU will be reversed by leaders who understand the role of technology in today’s societies, and who can deploy the softer people, strategic and business skills to lead their organizations.” The survey was conducted by the Club International des Ingenieurs ET des Industriels (CIII) among Europe’s leading CEO’s.

I think one of my most distinguished characteristics is the diversity of experience I possess. I am a science student with a flair for the projects. I am a man with technical aptitude and an interest in management. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work.

My engineering degree has given me a strong foundation to my analytical skills since electrical engineering involves a lot of long, complex and intricate calculations and the application of basic math skills. Over the past three years after graduation, I have been working full-time with an EPC firm in New Delhi, Mohan Energy Corporation Pvt. Ltd. My tenure with the firm has been a very enriching experience enabling me to grow professionally as well as personally. I started my career as a management trainee. Within two years I was promoted to hold a position of Asst. Manager-Projects. I have been assigned roles and challenging tasks that demand a high degree of responsibility and have been rewarded for effectively working in multiple projects simultaneously. In the first year in the firm, I was able to learn about various marketing tools and overall business strategies with respect to preparing technical and commercial bid and compete in different tenders for overseas operations.

I have always tried to optimize my time by using it to understand the complexities involved in the processes of business administration, with particular emphasis on the art of decision making and when placed in uncertain conditions. I believe, I was able to demonstrate my leadership and project management skills when I was assigned a responsibility of supervising a solar electrification project in Mozambique. This particular project required meticulous planning and successful implementation of solar systems installations in the first run. I was able to form a local team in Mozambique. As to co-ordinate the activities with my fellow colleagues in project execution. Very soon I was able to understand that in order to work in an efficient and high time bound frame; I had to adjust to the culture and language quickly.

Other major responsibilities assigned to me were to co-ordinate the project with sub-contractors, clients and head office through project review meetings and site visits. Material handling and delivery to sites, material records, progress reviews and educating beneficiaries about the installed solar system and its maintenance was also in my scope of work. The activities required extensive traveling as the sites were located in remote areas. I particularly enjoyed working in this highly challenging environment. It was during this period of time that I realized the importance of proper and effective business administration for any project to be a success. I also realized the bridge between good technical and analytical skills and administration and management skills. This international experience of over 15 months has exposed me into the global management arena and helped me approach issues in life with an open mind.

MBA is the critical next step in my career advancement because I want to enter the marketing and operations management field.  MBA from Swansea Metropolitan University in Wales will give me exceptional brand value, academic rigor, the latest curriculum and a comprehensive learning prospect. It would provide me with a fertile ground to not only hone my existing skills but also learn new perspectives, skills, knowledge and an opportunity to be a part of diverse culture. I am sure it would be a wonderful experience to interact with the renowned professors of the university. Perhaps, even more importantly, I look forward to be in Swansea which will give me an environment of boundless innovation.

Subsequent to my graduation from Swansea Metropolitan University would give me a chance to join a reputed marketing firm. This will enable me to leverage my pre-MBA skills in Project Management and synergies it with skills gained during my MBA from UK. Business Administration in India is clearly at a point where it is set to become indispensable if the liberalization of the economy and expansion of consumer choice. The opening of the Indian economy, the markets have gradually become buyers’ markets. In India, market research is essentially used as a reactive tool, it is in the static stage; whereas, I feel that Business Administration should serve as a proactive tool, helping corporations optimize their functioning by bringing research into all marketing efforts, by integrating it into the long and short term marketing strategies and by involving the operational staff who actually carry out the work that can use informed research results. Business Administration often ends up being used as an isolated tool that gives a narrow picture of the past without giving a holistic view and an insight into the future.

The need of the hour are MBA professionals who are true managers – managers who have to facilitate a radical change in the way market research is looked upon today; very often as an activity done by a separate cell and an end in itself. I see myself, as a Business Administration professional, using research as an actionable tool, incorporating cutting edge methodologies, and getting the needed results while saving time and money. I want to turn it into a dynamic instrument, use it to feel the pulse of the market, make probabilistic predictions abut the market through sophisticated tools and ultimately get involved in product innovation and strategic planning.

To achieve this, I would like to gain exposure to the latest practices adopted by the trend makers in the field of market research and information systems. To this end, I would probably want to work with a leading international market research firm that would enable me to help corporations leverage their focus. I would like to bring this acquired expertise back to India, and use it to help companies to grow in the stiffly competitive market. I see market research as a sensitive and flexible instrument to be applied with insight, imagination and creativity.

Working at Adecco and then later at kotak mahindra bank as an assistant manager intern led me to realize the importance of market research to a company. At kotak mahindra bank I was part of a cross-functional team. It is here that I gained wide exposure to the tools of research design. At Adecco, I have worked as an efficient and effective coordinator throughout research processes and work directly with numerous researchers on a wide variety of projects. I have experience in research design, questionnaire development, analysis, writing and interpreting results and a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. I am proud to say that I am an enthusiastic individual with good people skills and enjoy working as a team player in a multi-task environment across department lines and organizational levels.

The ability to work in a fast paced setting with time sensitive jobs made my summer internship at Airtel a further step to learning. I was a part of a number of marketing promotions of the company on a local scale. My project on customer research on a key stock keeping unit required consumer profiling and a high degree of qualitative analysis through a study of buyer behavior using research tools like focus group interviews and perceptual mapping. Based on this study, I have planned and implemented marketing promotions to capture the home segment, within given budget constraints.

Apart from these, working on various school projects has given me varied experience on the basis of which I have decided that MBA in UK is where I would like to base my future. A career in MBA in London Metropolitan University would give me an opportunity to work across boundaries of industry definitions with a number of industries ranging from consumer goods to innovative communication and high tech markets.

I possess a broad-based management education. I believe that I require a sharply defined and focused course in marketing research. The expertise to analyze the marketing as well as the strategic problems faced by companies and implement corresponding solutions is what I want. An international exposure coupled with the immense opportunity in the Indian marketplace will help in breaking new ground in Indian marketing research.

I want to study in London Metropolitan University for Master of Business Administration for several reasons. The focused structure of the course will help me concentrate and work towards the attainment of my career goals. The internship provided within the Business Administration course work would help me gain exposure, insight, knowledge and hands-on experience with real time work environment. I am impressed with the quality of education provided by the university in terms of the well-structured curriculum and the recognized faculty. I look forward to shaping my career in the halls of London Metropolitan University in UK.
