As a matter of fact, more than 35,000 students enrol with the university every year. Although it was created only in 1992, its roots can be traced back to 18th century, 1828 to be more specific. The founding institution was then called ‘Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge’. One can make out the grandeur of this popular university located in Preston, Lancashire from its yearly turn over of £120 million with a £300 million yearly contribution to regional economy. More than 70% of its student population come from the North West region and the university is planning to maintain that share with its ever growing promotional and development projects.

UCLAN is in partnership with 30 education institutions and colleges like Preston College, Burnley college etc. some of which offer an opportunity for progression to UCLAN students. The university has made its presence felt on the international turf with the initiation of fire engineering course in Hong Kong, the Gulf and Russia, International Fashion Institute [IFI], and the Confucius Institute [ for the development and promotion of Chinese language and culture]. The recent Research Assessment Exercise declared 17 of the university’s subject research as ‘international excellence’ level research and 11 subject areas as ‘world leading’ research.

A student can excel in any subject of his choice and earn an associate, graduate degree and a post graduate degree recognised on a global level. With the university investing up to £60 million in areas like ‘media factory’, dentistry, indoor sports centre, facility for forensic science courses and a futures centre for enhancing students’ employability skills, a student can expect an over round experience while his stay here. UCLAN extend facilities like modernised library, sports, scholarships programmes, student support groups, survival guides and work training and placement opportunities.

Normally a student can apply to these courses after completing his A levels [for UK students] or other equivalents for further education [for international students]. UK higher education system can be compiled into two main components
• Undergraduate programs
• Postgraduate programs

Undergraduate Courses

Normally, an undergraduate program in UK for any subject takes up to 3 years for completion. Interestingly, there is a rising trend towards the newly introduced ‘Sandwich Courses’ which gives students one extra year of work experience. This study program curriculum is applicable in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, Scotland follows its own education system and offers 4 years of undergraduate study programs.

Postgraduate courses

International students can pursue these courses after the completion of their graduate programs either in UK or in their home country. These courses are mostly shorter in length except for certain subjects like medicine, law, teaching, veterinary which require 5 years of study. You will find graduate schools in UK being segregated into three parts i.e.

Taught Masters- study programs of 1 year in duration.
Research Masters- study programs for 2 years in duration.
PhD- study program of 3-4 years in duration involving flexible curriculum to accommodate independent research space.

One of the reasons behind the popularity of UK higher education system amongst international students is its affordability with most schools being less expensive than the average graduate schools in countries like U.S. and Canada. You don’t have to undergo rigorous study of 2-3 years to earn your master’s degree in UK as the similar goal is achieved within a year’s duration. You can also earn an easy scholarship with your previous academic records. The new student Visa & Immigration rules have also provided you with a 2 year work permit after the completion of your graduate course.
